What is Geotechnical Engineering?
Geotechnical engineering is the application of the principles of soil and rock mechanics to investigate subsurface conditions, such as soil density, nutrients, compaction and particle-size. This investigation is ultimately used to determine the physical, mechanical and chemical properties of these subsurface materials. Geotechnical engineering also evaluates the stability of natural slopes and man-made soil deposits. It is key in assessing any risks posed by the site conditions to small or large-scale building and construction projects.
